In a quiet nook in the Ever Grande City public library, Gunner waited. He sat at a table with a book open in front of him, a detective novel. Dressed in casual clothing, he looked every inch the casual bookworm, enjoying some light reading on a hot summer afternoon.[break][break]

A short distance away, browsing the stacks or reading their own books, were several similarly dressed agents of the HBIC.[break][break]

And each one of them, Gunner included, was waiting for contact at the appointed time.[break][break]

Out of the corner of his eye, the blonde agent saw Summer Atreides approach. Her footsteps were light, their sound muted by the carpet of the grand library. He continued reading, pretending he hadn't noticed her.[break][break]

Only when she sat across from him at the table did he look up from his book and speak. "Thank you for being punctual, Miss Corleone."[break][break]

Their clandestine meeting was all business, and they had no time to spare; there was no need for pleasantries.

Ever Grande City was far from a foreign place to Summer. But stepping foot on the path leading to the library enhanced her senses as she climbed the steps. There was paranoia gnawing at her gut, walking past the security point and giving a courteous "hello," to the library staff.[break][break]

Her footsteps were soft, notably so, as she browsed the books for a brief moment only to pull a random romance novel off the shelf for appearance's sake. With the spine tucked into her arm, she made her way to the table she was instructed to meet him at.[break][break]

"By the window? Or by the nonfiction novels?" Summer muttered to herself, scanning around the area until his familiar head of hair caught her gaze.[break][break]

Among other people, scattered about.[break][break]

With her lips pressed in a firm line, Summer came and sat across from him, crossing her legs as she attempted to get comfortable. Even Gunner Graves's words seemed foreign to her.[break][break]

"Of course," she offered, though her gaze didn't meet his and instead fell on her book as she set it on the table. "Let's get started."

Gunner scanned the library space behind Summer, seeking individuals who might have followed her. But one of the junior agents posted by the stairwell shook her head minutely. Seconds later, a voice in the earpiece Gunner wore confirmed the gesture.[break][break]

"Savannah arrived at the site alone. We remain on the lookout for other suspicious persons. Proceed with the contact."[break][break]

Savannah was the codename the HBIC had given Summer for this meeting, used only by their agents and unknown to Summer herself.[break][break]

Gunner lowered his gaze to the book in front of him. When he spoke, his voice was low, as if abiding by the rule of the library to speak softly. "Just so we're clear, I need to confirm you understand that seeking our help does come with a certain level of risk."[break][break]

He flipped the page of his novel.[break][break]

"We will do our utmost to protect you, but you inherently risk injury and even death by the actions you wish to take. Do you still want to do this?"

Summer had spent many nights contemplating a message to Gunner Graves. After their meeting the day after arriving from Galar, she had found it harder and harder to focus on work. Any task sent out by team Rocket had run a chill down her spine and was accepted begrudgingly.[break][break]

But she had wondered, could she allow herself to escape and live a life of peace? Even after everything she had done for team Rocket?[break][break]

Summer's pause was long as her fingers played with the page of her novel, looking down but not taking in a single word. When she finally gained the courage, she spoke.[break][break]

"I wouldn't have reached out if I didn't want to. I want to do this, Mr. Graves."[break][break]

There was a pause.[break][break]

"Gunner. I'm willing to put my life on the line to correct my wrongs."

Gunner nodded, mentally noting the way Summer tried and failed to speak formally with him. "Very well."[break][break]

He flipped another page of his book, scanning the words with his eyes but not reading them. No warnings came through his earpiece, but that did not mean they had the luxury of time.[break][break]

"Then we need additional information from you. In particular, a list of people who you absolutely trust above all others who we may be able to incorporate into a plan; and also, a list of people who you absolutely do not trust."[break][break]

Briefly, Gunner raised his eyes from his book.[break][break]

"We don't need the list now, but if there are specific names that come to mind right away, you can tell me."[break][break]

The HBIC had several ways to help someone defect. For members of Team Rocket who were known terrorists, a fake death followed by a new identity was the best method. But Summer, whose ties with the crime syndicate were not known by many, had a few different options.[break][break]

"In the meantime, you need to start thinking of what you want to do with your wealth and assets," Gunner continued. "You can relinquish everything and start anew, but I have a feeling someone with your net worth would prefer to keep as much money as you have."

A list of people she trusted and didn't trust. The list of "didn't trust" would be much easier for Summer to make. Her list of friends or allies had been in the higher ranks of team Rocket. And she knew without a doubt, they would be determined to hunt her down and kill her for leaving.[break][break]

Those loyal to declan walsh and his ideals above all else.[break][break]

Summer's immediate thought of loyal friends traveled to Eris Halla. However, she'd never incorporate her into a plan where she'd be in danger. The girl was like a daughter to her, and she wanted her to have a happy life. She had too many troubles without her adding to the pile.[break][break]

There was another.[break][break]

"I already have one in mind. The one that cannot be trusted is..." Summer jotted down a name, attempting to be as covert as possible with the name. A rose for Fiorelli.[break][break]

Should she need to explain later, she would. But her fear of the possibility of Rocket being near was too great to elaborate.[break][break]

"There's one person I trust to help us. Cade Atreides. If you explain a plan to him, I'm certain he'd be willing to assist."[break][break]

Summer paused. Her company. Her assets, her money. That wasn't something she could just easily throw away. Though... "Callan Young. He and I discussed becoming partners relatively recently as he's entering the business world. Let me talk to him about my company."

Gunner accepted the paper slipped to him from across the table. Summer had drawn a simple rose with the name 'Fiorelli' underneath. Only one woman in the HBIC database had such a unique surname — Elisabeth Fiorelli, known Team Rocket underboss.[break][break]

Summer continued to speak. The agent crumpled the paper in his hand and resumed gazing at the book in front of him.[break][break]

Cade Atreides was a well-known mercenary. The HBIC employed people like him sometimes to assist their field operatives with off-the-record work, but Gunner had never worked alongside one before.[break][break]

He did not wonder how Summer knew Cade. Though it surprised Gunner to hear her mention the man by name, the use of CEOs to hire mercenaries as private security was very common. Still, even if she trusted him, the HBIC would have to dig into Cade to ensure he was the right person for the job.[break][break]

As for Callan Young, Gunner was less concerned about the rock star's involvement. Rich people did whatever they thought was best for their own interests. If Summer wanted to put her faith in him, then that was her risk to take.[break][break]

"All right," the agent said, shifting in his chair as he turned the page of his book. "Make your preparations with Mr. Young. In the meantime, continue your day-to-day life as normal, as CEO of Lion Heart Trading Company."[break][break]

He raised his gaze again.[break][break]

"We will update you with the plan as needed, but keep in mind we might withhold information from you in order to make the plan more believable."[break][break]

He closed his book.[break][break]

"Do you have any questions, Miss Corleone?"

Summer paused. Then, she recalled her plans on the yacht she had with Callan Young. Perhaps she could bring up the company and some of the details to him then, or at the very least feel out his feelings to taking over in some sort of way.[break][break]

Though being left in the dark, regardless of how much she already knew, left a sour taste in her mouth.[break][break]

The CEO side of Summer, the head corporate boss that never took no for an answer, started to rise. However, she reeled herself in as her lips began to part to object. She wasn't running the operation. In fact, Gunner had more experience in this avenue than she did.[break][break]

If she took over, she could easy get killed. Though she wore a look of annoyance, she didn't object, rather grunting to confirm she'd heard him as she crossed her arms over her chest and looked outside the window of the library.[break][break]

"None at this time. Though I will reach out on my burner if I do," Summer offered.

Gunner nodded, familiar enough with Summer's personality to tell that she didn't like not being in charge of her own defection. But such operations were delicate. In order for them to succeed, the League had to run the show.[break][break]

"Great. We'll be in touch." He stood, his crime novel tucked under his arm. In the near distance, other plainclothes agents stirred, ready to disperse.[break][break]

But Gunner paused for a moment, even as he began to turn away.[break][break]

"And Summer? Do be careful, please."[break][break]

He looked directly at her, hoping to catch her gaze with his. Though subtle, the lines of his face conveyed the concern only one friend could have for another.
